My first night in Lithuania. Hard downpour and no campgrounds. I bought a Lithuania map, in Lithuania, so I thought it would be pretty accurate. I circled and circled to find the campsite marked on the map, but since it was just a icon on a map, I didn't have any address to go by. At one point I tried to ask some kids. They spoke no English, some were scared of me, and the others laughed at me. I actually thought of riding all night. Not. My generator light wasn't kicking in on the uphills, and I was having some problems finding the road. Finally at 10pm ('bout 17 hours on the bike) I headed into the woods. Easier said than done. I couldn't really see what I was doing, the bushes were taller than me and had some kind of vine with little prickers on them. They were grabbing me like velcro, and wrapping themselves all over me and my rig. I didn't want to be seen by any car that might come around the corner, so I pressed on like an obsessed freak. I made it about 30 yards and cleared off, by stomping, an area for my tent. Everytime a car passed I turned out my light and ducked. I didn't know if this was illegal and/or if I was on private land. All in the pouring rain, I was so frickin' happy to wash myself with a sock and a bottle of water, and finally climb into a clean warm sleeping bag. You can see the tent in the background. All panniers went in with me. |
